THINGS ABOUT FANTA I DID NOT KNOW (1940-present): The Fanta brand got first created as a substitute in Germany in 1940 because of difficulties importing Coca-Cola syrup into Germany during World War II due to an American trade embargo. To circumvent this, Max Keith, the man in charge of Coca-Cola Deutschland during World WarII, decided to create a new product for the German market, using only ingredients available in Germany at the time, including whey and pomace the "leftovers of leftovers," as Keith later recalled. The name was the result of a brief brainstorming session, which started with Keith making his team "use their imagination" ("Fantasie" in German), to which one of his salesmen, Joe Knipp, immediately retorted "Fanta!" The original German Fanta had a red-orange color from beets and tasted different from today's Fanta Orange; the flavor would change during the war, depending on what ingredients could be found. In 1955, Coca-Cola relaunched the Fanta brand in Naples, the regional capital of Campania of Italy, began using local citrus to formulate the now famous Fanta Orange flavor. It went on sale in theUnited States in 1960 and by 1969 it was the biggest-selling flavour on the planet. Currently, Fanta is the second-largest soft drink brand in the world.
VINTAGE FANTA BOTTLES: The first 1940s bottles were brown in colour with the lower half ribbed. The printed label is orange brown with white border and Fanta Klassik written in white on them. By 1950s into the 1960S the fanta bottles were clear glass with the lower half ribbed. The printed label is blue with a white border and Fanta written in white on them. By the 1970s into the 1980s the Fanta bottles were clearglass with the lower half ribbed. The printed label is white with blue Fanta written on them with the classic 3 dotted crown halfmoon over the N. The first Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) plastic bottle was made in 1973 and slowly started to dominate. In 1978 Coca-Cola and Pepsi, introduced the first 2l PET plastic bottles to the World. Eventually, the glass bottle was overshadowed by the plastic model, as it was less expensive to transport. Glass bottles continued to be used for bottling soda until the late1980s.
