This item had been in a garage for many years. I gave it a good soap water spray and a lot of grime came off. After that I put on a this coat of oil, and the colour changed from black to red.
There are a few weights, but they do not look like a set. The number on the base is 4800 but the figures 5808 also appear on various parts. There is a stirrup and other parts, (See last picture), which do not appear to be part of this scale.
Size of platform 354 x 210 mm. Maximum length front to back 570 mm x 400 mm.
Weight about 20 kilograms. Buyer must arrange collection. I am in Pretoria. Awkward shape to pack, but will try to get it into a carton so as to make it easier for the collector.
This factory made scales until the late 1950's, but the estimate is that it is a 1930's item. The previous owner is in his late 80's and he remembers his father using it in his general store when he was a child.
I will try to reply to any questions regarding this item. The assise stamps on the weights only have a 6 so which year this was is unknown. I don't think it is very accurate.
