WW1 - Scarce Officers 'ORILUX' Signaling Torch & Trench Lamp with Case
This is a very rare model and a fine example of the 'ORILUX' trench lamp or torch, with its original leather case and strap. This lamp has the red and green revolving filters behind the lens, which you very rarely see or come across. The top has a small black and brass plaque with the makers details on - 'THE ORILUX' 'J.H. STEWARD LTD, 406, STRAND. LONDON'. The chrome work is in nice condition, and the knobs, buttons and battery cover seem to work or open well. All in all, the torch and case are in lovely condition for their age. It measures 15cm x 9cm x 6cm.
Note: These 'Orilux' torches or signaling lamps were offered to military and naval officers as a private purchase and could be carried on the Sam Browne waist belt. They were used for reading maps during night manoeuvres, rapid communication on outpost duty etc. The lamp is also fitted with a morse code key and can be turned on and operated without opening the leather case. For map reading or use at night in the field, when it is not desirable to expose light in a forward direction, the leather lid or hood reflects the light downwards. The hood has a red felt inner lining, as well as a special place for a spare bulb.
